Saint Louis

Washington DC

Portland

Many people go to the beach to enjoy the water. They want to swim, surf and scuba dive. However, not everyone enjoys going in the water during their beach trips. Some people don’t know how to swim. New York City is one of the great urban tourist destinations in the world.  Its history, unbelievable number of sights and experiences, and legendary big city vibe put it in a class by itself.  As with any major metropolis in the world, the Big Apple can be quite expensive.  All those $50 or $100 entrees, cross-borough taxi rides, Broadway tickets and unexpectedly expensive museum admission fees add up, and can blow your week-long-vacation budget in 24 hours.

Luckily, with a little planning and some big city savvy, it is possible to make your Big Apple bucks go further.

Unlimited ride cards for the New York Subway are a great way to save money.  These cards allow riders to use the subway an unlimited amount of times over a specific period.  A one-day pass costs only $7, with a weekly pass costing $24.  You still may find yourself taking a late night taxi ride or hopping a taxi to the airport, but to get anywhere in New York, the subway is usually more than sufficient for regular daytime hours.  You can use it for a week for the same price as a single taxi ride.

The Staten Island Ferry acts as a means of public transit carrying passenger from the Staten Island to Manhattan.  But it is also a great way to see the storied New York Skyline without spending lots of money for a boat ride aimed at tourists.  This is also true for the city’s buses.  While the subway helps you avoid all the traffic, the buses are better vehicles when it comes to sightseeing.  You can use both these above-ground public transit options as cheap sightseeing tours, provided you are able to plan out a route that will leave you back where you started.

Hotels are not cheap in New York.  Those traditional hotels that are under $100 may not offer the best experience (at best) and may not have proper security (at worst).  The answer?  Stay outside of a central area or opt for a hostel.  Hostels, which are popular amongst young travelers in Europe, are hotels that offer dorm-style rooms (shared by 2,3, or more people) for well under $100 per night.  Many are in the $40-$50 range.

The New York Pass offers discounted admission to 55 of the city’s most popular sites, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Guggenheim.  For people who want to hit multiple sites over a three-day or weeklong period, purchasing this type of pass can be worthwhile because it will more than pay for itself.  However, for tourists who will only visit one or two of the popular tourist attractions, and will spend most of their time exploring the city’s restaurants and neighborhoods, this pass is probably not a worthwhile investment.

Downtown Manhattan is filled with retail shops.  But it is also one of the most interesting places in the world to window-shop.  The lights and billboards make for the best urban scenery in the US and stores like the M&M Store are as much about providing an experience as they are about selling a product.  So it is possible to visit this center of the retail universe without spending a dime, although it is just as easy to max out your credit cards if you are not disciplined and careful.

So traveling to the Big Apple does not necessarily have to be an expensive, big city excursion.  With a little know-how and some planning, it can be quite cheap to visit the city for a weekend or longer.  Yes, sometimes, paying the big money is unavoidable (performances, sporting events, that world-famous restaurant).  But for travelers who follow some of the tips mentioned above for saving money in New York, there will be plenty left over when it comes time to splurge a little bit.

Do you want to get through airport security quickly and efficiently? The following 20 tips can help you do it:

1. Avoid wearing clothing, jewelry and accessories that have metal. You’ll set off the metal detector if you do and it will take longer to get through airport security.
2. Pack your pockets into a plastic bag. One of the things that people usually do at the metal detector is to empty out all of their pockets. You can simplify this by placing all of the items that normally go into your pockets into a single plastic bag. This bag is all that you’ll need to remove before you walk through the metal detector.
3. Wear comfortable but form-fitting clothing. If you wear loose or baggy clothing then you might be asked to go through additional security. The fewer layers of clothing you are wearing, the simpler the process is going to be.
4. Choose shoes that are easy to remove (such as flip flop sandals). You have to take off your shoes when going through security so this speeds things up.
5. Pack your carry-on bag so that it is completely uncluttered. You can use dividers and plastic bags to separate items in your carry-on so that they easily go through security.
6. Get a TSA approved backpack. If you have one then you don’t need to take your laptop out separately.
7. Limit the number of liquids you carry. You are limited to a one-gallon bag of clear containers measuring less than 3.4 ounces in size. Pack an even smaller amount if you can.
8. Pack meds properly. Pack your medications in a plastic bag. Include documentation proving that the medication is yours.
9. Check the TSA’s prohibited items list before you go. This will tell you if you need to pack certain items into your luggage instead of bringing it in your carryon. Examples of items that can’t go onto the plane are scissors, golf clubs, baseball bats, gun powder, hammers and brass knuckles.

10. Remove your coat as you approach the security line. It has to go through the X-ray machine.

11. Keep any gifts unwrapped. This will prevent the problem of having to unwrap the gifts for a security check only to re-wrap it again later.

12. Make sure that all batteries are charged. In some rare instances you may be asked to prove that cell phones and laptops are working. Make sure their batteries are charged so that you don’t have any issues.

13. Have your boarding pass and picture ID in hand. Don’t put this away until you have already gone through security.

14. Let airport security know if you are running late. One of the top travel hacks for people who are running late is to let someone at the airport know about the situation. They can help get you through security more efficiently.

15. Remove pets from carrying cases. If you are traveling with a pet then it needs to be removed from the carrying case as your turn to proceed approaches. Put the case through the X-ray screening machine. Hold the pet in your arms as you walk through the metal detector.

16. Remove babies from strollers. As with pets, children’s strollers and carriers must go through the X-ray machine. The baby can be held by the parent as he or she walks through the metal detector.

17. Keep your stress levels low. Arrive at the airport early. Travel during off-peak times. Eat before you go to the airport. These things reduce your stress levels so that getting through airport security won’t seem like such a big deal.

18. Be friendly to the staff. They are going to help you get through security more easily if you are patient and kind with them as they do their jobs.

19. Pay attention to what is going on. It’s stunning how many people ignore the directions of the security agents or don’t realize that their turn in line has arrived. Stay alert to move quickly through airline security.

20. Stick to yourself. Although you may want to pass the time by chatting up the stranger next to you, it’s best to avoid doing this. You never know what the other person is carrying on them. You want to avoid delays caused by “guilt by association” if the person near you has security issues.

Waterfalls are so magical. They cascade with powerful force down mountainsides. They are beautiful in their own right. They are also typically located in areas that are especially beautiful. Any waterfall that you may come across is a joy to see. However there are some grand waterfalls that are really must-see places for world travelers.

4. Boyoma Falls. This set of waterfalls is technically the largest set of falls in the world as measured by volume. It consists of a series of seven different falls. It is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This war-torn region isn’t very conducive to travel but maybe at some point in the future it will be so you can put this on your “one day” travel list.

5. Angel Falls. At more than 3,000 feet in height this is the tallest waterfall in the world. To see water crashing that far down is absolutely amazing. It is indescribable and something that just has to be seen in person.

6. Dettifoss. This is the largest waterfall in Europe when measured by volume. It is located in Iceland so it is surrounded by unique natural beauty. You have to be willing to put in some effort to see these cool waterfalls though because they aren’t accessible by road.

7. Willamette Falls. This Oregon waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in North America. It doesn’t quite compare to the power and beauty of Niagara Falls but it’s definitely a must-see destination spot. It is horseshoe shaped which makes it a unique type of waterfall.

8. Havasu Canyon Waterfalls. This is a set of waterfalls located in Lake Havasu, Arizona. This is a short driving distance from the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon, which is something to think about as you plan your trip. What is really cool about the waterfalls here is that you can swim underneath some of them. That’s a fantasy that a lot of people have when it comes to waterfalls. There are multiple waterfalls of varying heights here. The more you’re willing to hike in, the better the waterfalls that you will see.

9. Kaieteur Falls. This waterfall is both tall and powerful. This makes it a very impressive sight to see. It is located in Guyana (which is on the northern coast of South America). It is inside of a national park so it is very accessible to people who are visiting the area. In fact it is a major tourist attraction of this area.

10. Gocta Waterfall. This is an average waterfall in terms of size. It is tall (over 2,000 feet) but not particularly wide. What makes it a must-see waterfall is that it’s a newly discovered waterfall. Although the people of Peru who lived near it had been aware of it for centuries, it wasn’t something that the wider world new about until 2005. Packing for a cruise is a little bit different than packing for flights or train trips. Although many of the packing tips that normally help you will still be useful on a cruise vacation, there are some specific things that you need to make sure to pack for a cruise. 1. All of your important documents. Many cruise vacations take you to one or more international destinations. For that reason it is more important than ever to make sure that you have all of your important documents with you. These documents include:

Winter travel season is fast approaching.  This is the time of year that people start thinking about their winter getaways.  When the cold weather gets unbearable, a few days (or even a week) can be a lifesaver, or at least enough of a break to help you get through the rest of the snowy season with your sanity intact.

Because demand for tropical vacations rises during the colder months, so do the prices of airfares and hotels.  Flights to the Caribbean, Hawaii and the South Pacific can nearly double during the tropical travel high season.

Some airlines offer better deals that others.  Of course, it depends on which island destination you are headed for.  Some airlines have more frequent flights and package offerings for certain islands that can significantly reduce the price of a flight or hotel.

Since it launched its service to the Caribbean (mainly from its hub in Fort Lauderdale), JetBlue has become a major player in the Caribbean’s low-cost air travel game.  It offers plenty of sub-$100 one-way fares between Lauderdale and destinations like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas.  In addition, JetBlue offers connecting service between major island destinations.  That is rather rare for US-based airlines.

Another low-cost-carrier, AirTran, has also recently increased service to island destinations in the Caribbean.  Destinations include the Bahamas, Aruba and San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The airline regularly lists promotional fares and sale prices on its web site, making them easy to find.  Though AirTran does not have hotel/airfare packages, it does offer chances to book hotels at (sometimes) discounted rates through partner web sites.

Liat Airlines is a low-cost carrier that specializes in connecting the various Caribbean islands by air.  The airline often works with Caribbean Airlines to serve passengers from the US.  The airline is a no-frills carrier, but offers plenty of sub-$100 fares.  Liat’s service makes it easy for travelers to catch connecting flights to some of the Caribbean’s less visited destinations.  This makes cheaper, less crowded destinations easily reachable.  The airline also offers hotel deals to fliers.

Caribbean Airlines connects major cities in Eastern North America with the Caribbean’s hottest destinations.  Caribbean offers flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami, but also from other major hubs like New York JFK and Toronto Pearson.  Destinations include Kingston, Barbados and Trinidad, and also less-visited places like Suriname, Saint Martin and Antigua.  The airline is a good choice for non-package tourists who want an alternative to the service offered by legacy carriers.

Major legacy carriers all fly to the Caribbean and Hawaii.  The prices can be comparable to other carriers, but are sometimes more expensive.  However, for people traveling from destinations that do not have a direct service to the islands, United, Delta, Continental or American can often be the best deal overall.  In addition, these airlines sometimes offer the best overall deals on resort/hotel and airfare packages.  Each works regularly with resort and hotel chains and travel agents to provide a good selection of packages.

Air Tahiti Nui is the major airline serving French Polynesia.  These destinations (namely Tahiti and Bora Bora) are not cheap.  Airfares on Tahiti’s major air carrier are no exception.  However, the airline has several types of deals that are offered regularly and can be turned into significant money-savers.  An example was a recent promotion that allowed kids to fly free to Tahiti with a paid adult ticket.  Air Tahiti also offers packages that can significantly reduce the price of Tahiti and Bora Bora’s pricy hotels and resorts.  In addition, the airline occasionally offers deals on trips from LAX to Paris.

Hawaiian Airlines is one of many carriers that fly to America’s 50^th state.  It offers some of the best deals on flights, with promotional fares available for under $400 round trip.  The problem: passengers who aren’t on the West Coast have to catch a connecting flight because Hawaiian only flies from airports in the western one-fifth of the US.  However, if prices are low enough, it can still be a good deal.  This is especially the case for passengers who want to take advantage of Hawaiian’s package deals, which offer cheap prices on resorts and hotels for those who pay full-price for airfare.  These packages can be a significant money-saver for tourists from the Mainland.
