Do you believe that the way that you ring in the New Year has the power to dictate what the year is going to be like? Many people find that this is true. Others don’t believe this but still want to kick off the New Year right with a very cool New Year’s Eve celebration. Following is a list of ten awesome destinations that can get you off on the right foot in the New Year.

Amsterdam, Netherlands. What is your New Year’s resolution this year? Many people resolve to try new things, daring themselves to do things that they have been anxious to do in the past. The safe and permissible attitude in Amsterdam makes it possible to get started right away if you’ve gone here for your New Year vacation. This is a place where you can legally smoke a little bit of hash, drink a little bit of absinthe and do whatever you might want to do in the Red Light District. If that’s not your thing, it’s also just a beautiful European destination that makes for a great vacation destination any time of year!

New York City. Specifically, it’s worth it to go to Times Square to enjoy the huge party that takes place each year. This may not be something that you want to do every year but you should do it at least once. See the dropping of that famous ball in person for a change instead of watching it on television!

Berlin, Germany. For a similar experience head to Germany to enjoy the wild activities of Berlin. This is like the Times Square of Europe in many ways. More than one million New Years revelers gather together at the Brandenburg Gate to ring in the holiday together. If you are seeking a big street party in a destination other than New York City then this is a really great option.

Bangkok, Thailand. Yet another leading New Years Eve party city is this Asian option. It’s one of the most affordable options as far as the most popular party destinations go despite the fact that it’s usually more expensive to go here for New Years than at other times throughout the year.

Mexico City. Consider trying out a Latin American New Year’s instead. This large city has a cool New Years celebration that people of all ages can enjoy. Many people like to combine their Christmas vacation and their New Year’s vacation here, enjoying the religious influence of the Christmas holiday as well as the party options for New Years.

Reykjavik, Iceland. If you’re looking for something a little bit quieter in an amazing destination then check out what’s going on in Iceland this year. They do a New Year’s celebration so you won’t be bored but it’s also not overrun with drunken revelers either. It’s a great compromise and it will provide you with an unforgettable vacation experience.

Anchorage, Alaska. Many people love the idea of spending winter vacations like New Years in snowy destinations. If you can’t afford the time or money that it costs to spend the holiday in Reykjavik then consider going to Anchorage instead. This terrific American destination still provides a unique travel experience with an expansive landscape that will inspire you to start the New Year with a free mind.

Niagara Falls. There is no bad time of year to visit this amazing destination but New Years is one of the best times to go. The Canadian side of the border does a big celebration including fireworks. It can be very romantic but is also suitable for a family vacation for the New Year.

American Samoa. This may seem like an unlikely destination for the New Year. However, there’s a reason that it’s on the list. It’s the last place in the world where the clock strikes midnight. That means that if you really loved the last year you can savor it to the very end by spending your New Year’s Eve at this unique destination.

Christmas Islands. At the other end of the spectrum is this holiday destination, which is where the clock changes first. It will be the New Year here before it’s the New Year anywhere else in the world. If that sounds like a cool experience that you would like to have then plan your trip there now!

People travel for nearly every holiday. It’s Christmas that really stands out as a vacation holiday, though. Are you trying to figure out where to go for your Christmas vacation? Here’s a look at ten of the top destinations for Christmas travelers:

1. Quebec City, Canada. This is a particularly ideal vacation destination for Americans. It offers the charm of Old World Europe with the proximity of a North American destination. It’s guaranteed to offer a snowy White Christmas, which is a must for many holiday travelers. This city is known for providing a great Christmas experience to visitors. It has terrific holiday shopping options. It is filled with lights and decorated Christmas trees. And there are numerous holiday events to enjoy while you’re here. Plan now for a trip to this top destination!

2. Any of the Caribbean islands. At the opposite end of the spectrum from the snowy Christmas in Quebec is the sunny sand-laced Christmas on a Caribbean island. There are many reasons that this is a popular choice. The obvious one is that you can enjoy a great relaxing getaway without all of the Christmas trimmings. People who don’t celebrate Christmas find this especially appealing as do people who need a vacation after their traditional tense vacations back home!

3. Amsterdam, Netherlands. Returning to a more traditional snowy Christmas destination, this is a perfect time of year to take a trip to Amsterdam. This city starts celebrating Christmas in mid-November and doesn’t stop until the New Year. Even the infamous Red Light District here goes all out with Christmas lights! Numerous events are available to enjoy. In general this is just a magical destination and you’ll truly feel that ambience of holiday spirit in the air here.

4. San Francisco, California. If you’re looking for an American destination to enjoy this Christmas then consider San Francisco. You won’t get the snow but you will get to enjoy many other holiday activities. Ice skating in the shopping district of Union Square, attending an annual Dickens Christmas fair and singing carols on a cable car ride are all opportunities that will be available for Christmas. What’s great is that this place isn’t overrun with tourists during this time of year so you can enjoy all of these activities at an affordable price without too many crowds.

5. Austin, Texas. Another great American destination to enjoy during Christmas is Austin. What’s really great here is that it’s on the Trail of Lights. You can take this little road trip to enjoy the best Christmas light displays in the entire nation. Austin also offers numerous Christmas activities of its own to enjoy during your time in the city.

6. New York City. If you can’t imagine an American Christmas without snow then consider heading up to New York City this year. It’s a great urban destination that offers famous experiences like the Macy’s Parade, the world’s tallest Christmas tree and live viewing of The Nutcracker. It’s also likely to snow (and you can easily travel to much snowier New England destinations as well).

7. Lapland, Finland. This destination is well known during the Christmas season because it’s where Santa lives. Here you can enjoy all of the amazing trappings of Christmas including sleigh rides, seeing reindeer and taking a tour of the toys being made by Santa’s helpers. This makes for a great unique family vacation experience to enjoy at Christmastime.

8. Bethlehem, Palestine. Are you more interested in the true meaning of Christmas? Visit this religious center to experience that side of Christmas this year. Plan to attend the midnight mass at St. Catherine’s Church if you want to be part of the traditional Christmas experience here.

9. Vienna, Austria. If you want to bring Christmas gift souvenirs home from your trip then go here where the Christmas markets are absolutely amazing. You’ll also enjoy a terrific ski destination, a city with many Christmas activities and a generally merry vacation.

10. Your hometown. There are loads and loads of different destinations that could hold the last spot on our list. From the snowiest to the sunniest, it’s tough to select what’s really the best place for a memorable Christmas experience. However, the place that most people go is back to their hometown. Christmas is about spending time with family and friends so no matter where you’re from the place is special during the holiday season.

Boutique hotels are an increasingly popular choice among travelers. Also called lifestyle hotels or “design hotels”, these hotels offer unique one-of-a-kind accommodations that appeal to travelers who are tired of staying in the same cookie-cutter hotels that are available around the world. There are many different types of boutique hotels in nearly every location that you can imagine. Staying in them has pros and cons compared to other lodging options that should be taken into consideration if it’s your first time staying in a boutique hotel.

Benefits of Boutique Hotels

There are a lot of great reasons that people want to stay in boutique hotels. They include:

Creative and artistic living space. Boutique hotels often have furnishings and décor that are unique from anything you’ve ever experienced. This can range from high-end luxury décor to quirky, artsy and funky décor. Many boutique hotels are themed around art or design. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy accommodations that you may not otherwise experience in your life.

Personalized service. Boutique hotels are much more likely than traditional chain hotels to offer highly personalized service and a customized experience. This is due in part to the fact that these hotels are small hotels with fewer guests than large accommodations. This, of course, varies from place to place.

Location. Because boutique hotels are smaller they are often able to be built in city centers where there isn’t a lot of large space available to create big hotels. This can mean that the boutique hotel has a better location in some cities than other hotels do.

Supporting the small local business. There are boutique hotels that are operated by bigger chains and companies but many of them are mom-and-pop style hotels. It’s nice to support these places as a visitor when you can.

Cost. In some cases boutique hotels offer very low prices comparable to hostels and budget hotels. This varies widely depending on the hotel, though.

Drawbacks of Boutique Hotels

Although there are many great boutique hotels, there are also drawbacks to the boutique hotel. Consider some of these before planning your stay:

No brand name to offer comfort. Some people feel wary about staying in a hotel that they know nothing about except what reviews online may say. That’s why people stay in chain hotels; they know what to expect. The fact that boutique hotels are often one-off hotels means that you don’t have this sense of comfort before your stay.

Fewer rooms available. This means that it’s often important to book your hotel stay far in advance when choosing a popular boutique hotel. It also means that this isn’t usually a good choice for large groups traveling together.

Fewer business amenities. It’s often the case that boutique hotels are set up to accommodate business travelers who need fax machines, conference rooms, etc. during their stay. These hotels are better for personal travel.

Cost. In some cases boutique hotels are among the most expensive hotel options in an area. Again, this varies widely. Note that these hotels generally don’t offer loyalty programs like chain hotels do so you also can’t earn rewards like free stays.

Tips for Choosing a Boutique Hotel

To get the best balance of the pros and cons of boutique hotels, follow these tips:

Choose a boutique hotel that is part of a larger chain. For example the Starwood W Hotels and the Kimpton Hotels are chains of boutique hotels. They have the uniqueness and creativity of the boutique hotel combined with the familiarity of a brand name hotel.

Look carefully at costs to find a boutique hotel in your budget. Since the prices can vary so widely you need to really pay attention to what the prices are at these places, how they compare to other hotels in the area and what you get for your money.

Read the features carefully. Chain hotels offer standard features and amenities in all of their hotels. You never know what you’re going to get at a boutique hotel; it can range from few extra amenities to more luxury than you’ve ever experienced. Read about what’s available carefully before you book a hotel.

Rely on word of mouth. Ask people that you know for recommendations about good boutique hotels. Read reviews (with a critical eye) from people who have stayed at the hotels that you’re considering.

Swimming with dolphins is an amazing experience. These creatures are unlike any animal you’ve ever had the opportunity to be up close and personal with in the past. To swim with them is liberating, adventurous, and magical. There are many places around the world where you can choose to swim with dolphins. They are all beautiful places. Here are ten of the best places:

1. Hawaii. This state is one of the most amazing beach destinations in the world. It provides a relaxing vacation with many unique opportunities. It is stunning in its natural beauty. And it provides numerous opportunities to swim with dolphins. Top choices for doing so include The Waikiki Aquarium and The Dolphin Institute on Honolulu.

2. Florida. This is another great state for a beach vacation where you will have many chances to swim with dolphins. A leading choice is Discovery Cove, which is affiliated with Sea World Florida. However, you have other options as well such as Dolphin Cove in Key Largo and GulfWorld Marine Park in Panama City Beach. The Florida Keys are a great place to start your search for a U.S. destination to swim with dolphins.

3. Anguilla. Head out of the United States to an impressive island like Anguilla for a more exotic vacation where you can swim with dolphins. The dolphin swim will not be the only thing that you find magical in this island of secluded white sand beaches.

4. Tortola. Many people haven’t even heard of Tortolla, which makes it a really unique vacation spot. It’s the largest of the British Virgin Islands and offers everything from more white sand beaches to lush rain forests. An interactive dolphin program here makes it easy for you to plan your swim with dolphins.

5. Israel. People don’t typically think of Israel as a place to go swim with dolphins. That’s precisely what makes it a top place to check out since your experience will certainly be a one-of-a-kind adventure. There is a site where you can swim with dolphins on the shore of the Red Sea in their own natural habitat. Plus you can enjoy the religious mecca of this region when you’re not enjoying the dolphins.

6. New Zealand. Swimming with dolphins is a popular tourist activity in Australia. That’s certainly a great place to go. However the natural beauty of nearby New Zealand is even more wonderful and you’ll find the opportunity to swim with dolphins there as well. The Kaikoura coastline is a top spot for enjoying this adventure.

7. Japan. If you are interested in visiting Asia and also interested in swimming with dolphins that put Japan on your list of hot spots to visit. There are several different aquariums in Japan that provide the opportunity to swim with dolphins. The Kahoshima Aquarium in Shinmachi is a leading choice.

8. Mexico. The beaches of Mexico are a popular destination for people interested in scuba diving and snorkeling. They also provide a great opportunity to swim with dolphins in a variety of different settings. Check out The Dolphin Center at Dolphin Adventure in Nuevo Vallarta or Dolphin Discovery in Cozumel or Cancun.

9. Bahamas. Who doesn’t want to get the opportunity to visit the Bahamas at least once in their lifetime? Enhance this already unforgettable experience by swimming with dolphins while you are there. What is really great is that although there are opportunities to swim with dolphins in aquariums and pools, there are also other opportunities to swim with dolphins in their natural wild environment. This is a terrific experience and there is no spot on earth more beautiful to enjoy it than the warm sparkling waters of the Bahamas.

10. Fiji. People who take a trip to Fiji are typically interested in enjoying numerous outdoor adventures including many adventures on the water. Sailing, surfing and scuba diving are all activities that are enjoyed by tourists here. And yes, swimming with dolphins is yet another option for people who are visiting here. As with the Bahamas, you can swim with the dolphins in Fiji at an aquarium or on the shores or you can take a boat out to visit them in their natural habitat. Every option is a terrific one.

Are you interested in traveling to a place in the world that isn’t among the safest destinations? Many travelers stay far away from destinations where safety threats abound. However, other travelers don’t want their fears to rule their hearts when it comes to seeing the world. Some of the richest countries in the world are in destinations with safety warnings and there are people who want to see those places before they die.

If you want to travel to a place that has a safety warning, follow these tips to keep yourself as safe as possible:

1. Read all of the travel warnings carefully. It is important to completely understand what the threats are in the country that you are planning to visit. The U.S. government issues detailed travel warnings to help visitors gain knowledge about the areas of the world where it may be unsafe to travel. Make sure that you read these with great attention so that you know what you are getting into.

2. Read the news. Travel warnings alone don’t provide you with all of the information that you need to fully understand the situation that you will be facing when traveling to a destination with a safety threat. Make sure that you read the current news to find out what else is going on in the immediate time leading up to your trip (and while you are there, although access to accurate news varies by location).

3. Connect with travelers who have been to the area. Travel warnings and news reports are very useful. However there is nothing more valuable than learning first hand what travel is like from people who have recently been to the area as visitors. Connect with people via the Internet to get useful tips and information from an insider’s view.

4. Research the laws and customs. To avoid trouble as much as possible, you’ll want to keep yourself in line with the laws and customs of your destination. These may be very different from what you are used to. For example, you may be visiting a “dry” area where drinking alcohol can land you in prison. You may need to dress in a more conservative manner than you are used to, especially if you are a female traveler. Carrying firearms and even taking photos in certain places can land you in prison. Know the rules and follow them.

5. Get your affairs in order before you go. Make sure that you do extensive planning before a trip to a threatening destination. Prepare for an emergency. Make sure that you have a will, guardianship papers for any children you have, etc. Hopefully you won’t need any of this but make sure that you prepare just in case.

6. Don’t look rich. You may stand out like a sore thumb as a tourist in a non-touristy destination. Do what you can to blend in including making sure not to dress flashy or showy.

7. Know where the embassy is located. It is important to know how to get in contact with the United States government if you do get into trouble. Be aware of the fact that areas with travel warnings are areas where the government may have a limited ability to assist you. Nevertheless, make yourself aware of where the closest embassy is and how to contact the people there.

8. Check in with others. You should have a plan in place to regularly check in with others to let them know that you’re all right. This way you’ll know that someone is on the alert if something happens and they don’t hear from you.

9. Use common sense and trust your gut instinct. People who are traveling to areas where danger is present are sometimes willing to take unwise risks. It’s the nature of this type of travel. However, once you’re there, you really need to tune into your gut. You need to use common sense in terms of staying away from dangerous parts of the city, especially at night. If you sense that something is wrong, it probably is. Err on the side of caution.

10. Have a way to get home if you need to. Figure out an escape route out of the country to a nearby destination that is safer. Have enough money to get home in an emergency.

Free is good, especially when you are on vacation. With hotel bills and airline tickets, even the vacation basics can get expensive. Add museum admissions, event tickets, sightseeing tour fees and pricy big city restaurants into the mix, and your weeklong urban vacation budget could be blown in a couple of days.

For frugal travelers, some cities are better than others. Every city has free attractions, but sometimes that does not go much beyond activities like feeding crumbs to pigeons in a park. Luckily, there are cities with heaps of free activities that can make a trip exciting without making it expensive.

Here are the best cities for free activities.

Saint Louis

This city is a budget traveler’s playground. There are free activities galore. The Anheuser-Busch brewery offers tours daily. The tour features views of the brewery’s inner workings and includes free samples. The smaller Shlafly Brewery has a similar experience and will appeal to beer purists and those who consider Budweiser too flavorless. Saint Louis also has a full museum menu. Despite being world class museums (of the type that charge high admission in most cities), the Saint Louis Art Museum, History Museum and Science Center are all free. The Saint Louis Zoo is one of the few completely free zoos remaining in the United States. If museums and beer aren’t your thing, Saint Louis is filled with outdoor art and features summertime theater performances at the historic Muny amphitheater.

Washington DC

The obvious attractions here are the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and other similar sites. Recognizable government buildings also offer snap-shot-taking opportunities. Of course, a visit to Washington DC can go well beyond having your picture taken in front of the White House and Lincoln Memorial. The National Zoo, Library of Congress, National Air and Space Museum and National Archives are all free with the latter three offering regular docent-led tours. And there are plenty of additional options beyond the well-known attractions. The National Museum of Women’s Art, the Goethe Institute, the Mexican Cultural Institute and the African American Civil War Memorial also have historic and sightseeing value. The Kennedy Center, National Theater and National Gallery of Art all have free weekly concerts during the warmer months. This is only a small sample of DC’s freebies.

Houston

Houston is a sprawling city that can be difficult to navigate. But there are plenty of free activities and most take place at centrally-located venues. Some of the city’s museums are free all of the time, and most, if not all, offer free admission on certain days or evenings. Some rely on corporate sponsorship to offer a free day once a week or once a month. The Children’s Museum, for example, has free admission on Thursday evening (and is reasonably priced anyway). The Museum of Fine Arts is free on Thursdays and the well-respected Houston Photography Center regularly hosts free events. The Cullen Sculpture Gardens is a popular, free outdoor option. But the free-ness goes beyond the museum scene. For example, Houston’s Port Authority offers free 90-minute cruises around the Houston ship channel.

Minneapolis

This art-happy city in the Northern Midwest has plenty of free museums and events. The Minneapolis Institute of Art never charges admission and the world-renown Walker Art Center offers free admission on some evenings. The sculpture garden, adjacent to the Walker, is free every day. The Como Park Zoo (actually located in Minneapolis’s smaller twin, Saint Paul), is one of the few remaining free zoos in the country. Free concerts are held in Downtown Minneapolis during the summer. And a stroll around one of the city’s picturesque lakes is always free.

Portland

The user-friendly West Coast city is filled with money saving opportunities. Forest Park, one of the world’s largest urban parklands, is a popular attraction for nature lovers. Pioneer Courthouse Square, a uniquely designed central commons area in Downtown Portland, is known as Portland’s living room. There are frequent performances and events held in the square and food vendors can be found in the area at meal times. Portland is known for its arts scene. Whereas most cities have art walks once a month (where art galleries open their doors to the general public), Portland’s art parties happen twice monthly. The more upscale Pearl District has open houses in galleries on the first Thursday of the month, while the hip Alberta District hosts a more colorful event (complete with music, street performers and artists selling their work on the street) on the final Thursday of the month.

Many people go to the beach to enjoy the water. They want to swim, surf and scuba dive. However, not everyone enjoys going in the water during their beach trips. Some people don’t know how to swim. Others are scared of the water or simply dislike it. And still others may enjoy the water at times but find it too cold or uncomfortable on a particular trip. That’s okay. There are lots of fun things that you can enjoy on the land when you’re visiting the beach.

The top ten land activities for beach vacations are:

Ride ATVs. Beaches are often covered with san dunes. Those dunes are great for the adventurous activity of riding four wheelers. You can also ride dirt bikes on the beach. Note that not all beaches allow these activities but those that day are lots of fun. You’ll never forget a beach vacation spent riding ATVs near the waves.

Sandboarding. You don’t have to have an ATV or dirt bike to enjoy an adventure on the sand dunes of a beach. You can use a sandboard instead. This is similar to a snowboard but is, obviously, intended for use on sand dunes. If you’ve never tried this sport, consider it for your next beach vacation.

Horseback Riding. Another adventurous activity to enjoy on the beach is a horseback ride. If you’re traveling to the beach but know that you don’t love the water then plan this type of activity to make your trip memorable. It’s fun for kids but can also be romantic for adults. Horseback rides may take place along the side or even in the shallow part of the water. Go at sunrise or sunset for an experience that’s really special.

Build Sandcastles. This is an activity that anyone can do. Even the youngest of children and the eldest of beach visitors can sit down on the sand and build themselves a sandcastle. However, others can get truly detailed and spend a lot of time making an elaborate and beautiful sandcastle sculpture. Either way it’s fun!

Beach Volleyball. One of the leading all-ages activities that people enjoy on the beach is a good old-fashioned game of volleyball. Many beaches that tourists visit have their own volleyball nets already set up for use. All that you need is the ball and some people to play with. If you’re low on people, that’s okay; there are almost always enough people around a beach for a pickup game!

Frisbee. One of the simplest toys that you can take with you to the beach is a Frisbee and yet it’s also one of the most fun toys to have with you on a beach vacation. Play with your dog, your kids, your friends or your spouse. This is affordable and can be done on any beach.

Fly Kites. One of the most disappointing things that can happen on a beach vacation is for the weather to be cold and rainy during your trip. However you can make the most of it by getting a kite and going out into the wind. This childlike activity is fun for all ages and can brighten up a cloudy spot in a beach vacation.

Treasure Hunting. There are a lot of cool things that wash up onto the shore of the ocean. Take your shoes off and walk along the edge where the water meets the land. Hunt for shells. Look for seaweed. Check out the bugs and birds that are hanging out near the water. To add to your treasure hunting fun, bring a camera. Photography is another leading beach land activity!

Hiking. Many bodies of water are surrounded by beautiful hiking trails. Take advantage of that during your trip to the beach. These trails often offer great views of the water below once you start climbing away from the beach.

Picnicking. Enjoy a wonderful picnic on the beach. Bring a shade umbrella to keep yourself comfortable if it’s a hot and sunny day. Bring a blanket or towels to not only sit on but also to set your food on. Double check if the beach allows alcohol before you bring any with you on your picnic. For a real treat, do a fireside picnic on a beach that allows bonfires.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is a luxury destination in Baja California Sur. People go here to spend time relaxing on outstanding golf courses, inside of five-star restaurants and lounging at amazing beaches. It wouldn’t do to spend your days doing that and your nights at a cheap motel. That’s why most people who go to Cabo San Lucas are interested in staying in the area’s great resorts. There are numerous resorts to choose from but each offers something unique and interesting to enjoy.

Let’s take a look at the best of the best.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort for Destination Weddings. Many people enjoy weddings and honeymoons in this part of the world. The best resort to stay at is Capella Pedregal, a romantic resort located on its own private beach just outside of the city’s downtown area. You won’t feel like you ever need to leave the resort because it offers the dining, beaches and beauty that you’re seeking from a Cabo San Lucas wedding.

Best Affordable All-Inclusive Cabo San Lucas Resort. Most of the resorts that you will choose to stay in here are fairly pricey but there are some affordable options. The best of those options is Tesoro Resorts Los Cabos. This is a resort hotel that offers all-inclusive packages at a fair price. Some of the perks at this place include a span and fitness center and a balcony view of the beautiful Sea of Cortes.

Best Cabo San Lucas Golf Resort. Golfing is one of the top vacation activities enjoyed by Cabo San Lucas visitors. Why not stay at a great resort that offers golf right outside of your room? Your best option is Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos Golf and Spa. It was rated among the top ten golf hotels by Golf Digest Magazine. If you’re going to Cabo with someone who isn’t as big a fan of golf as you are then they’ll be happy to know that this resort also has fie swimming pools, numerous restaurants and a span and fitness center. It has a private beach and a view of the Sea of Cortez. Notably a great runner-up in this category is Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort and Spa. It is close to more than half a dozen great golf courses and has additional perks including three pools and five restaurants.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort for Horseback Riding. One of the most romantic things that you can do at Cabo San Lucas is to go horseback riding on the beach. The best resort for people who are interested in this option is Las Ventanas Al Paraiso. This resort also offers sailing, surfing and scuba diving opportunities.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort for Beach Swimming. Many of the resorts in this area are located on private beaches but the rugged beaches aren’t safe enough for swimming. Most people swim at their resort’s pools instead. However, people who choose to stay at the Hilton Los Cabos resort can enjoy the opportunity to go swimming on the beach outside of their accommodations. Another nice perk of this resort is a historic Spanish design including a hacienda and courtyard.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort for Celebrity Sightings. Numerous celebrities have been caught staying at Melia Cabo Real resort in Cabo San Lucas. It’s no wonder since this resort offers a range of activities including golf, rock climbing, zip lining, tennis and swimming. It’s primarily b-list not a-list celebrities that you’ll see here but that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort with Gardens. The natural beauty of the Cabo San Lucas area is enhanced at resorts that feature gardens with gorgeous plant life. ME Cabo is the best resort for this option with its numerous gardens around pretty free-form pools.

Best Cabo San Lucas Resort for People who Like Boutique Hotels. More and more people are interested in staying at charming, unique boutique hotels rather than trendy chain-style hotels. This trend is beginning to extend to boutique resorts as well. If this sounds like your style then the best resort for you in Cabo San Lucas is Pueblo Bonito Pacifico, a minimalist boutique adults-only resort on the Pacific Ocean.

Have you ever taken a vacation for Halloween? Many people don’t think of this holiday as a time for travel but it’s actually a great time to take a trip. Since most of the vacations that happen at the end of the year are for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, travel for Halloween is typically off-peak travel. That means it’s often fairly affordable. Additionally, Halloween travel may take you to destinations that you wouldn’t usually consider, which can provide a great vacation experience.

Ten great destinations for a Halloween vacation are:4

1. San Francisco. This is a city that loves to play and to dress up in costumes. It is no wonder that there are plenty of things to do here for Halloween. Options range from kid-friendly events like trick-or-treating at the zoo to decidedly adults-only events like the annual Exotic Erotic Ball and Adult Entertainment Expo. There are numerous other costume and candy events at local attractions, hotels and clubs.

2. New York City. This is another terrific destination city for people who want to check out cool local Halloween events. The place to be for the big Halloween party is Greenwich Village. Here you’ll find an amazing costumed parade and lots of live music. You will also find a crowd because nearly two million people typically come out for this big event. You may have thought New Year’s Eve was the time to head to New York City (and it is) but don’t underestimate how amazing the city is at Halloween.

3. Transylvania, Romania. Who doesn’t think about characters like vampires when Halloween rolls around? What better place to indulge in that historical fantasy than in Translyvania? The city lives up to its name with lots of cool Halloween events that play off of the Dracula theme. The best place to be is Bran’s Castle (also known as Dracula’s Castle), which is in the creepy Carpathian Mountains. A huge Halloween event takes place here throughout the week combining costumed fun with historic tours.

4. Venice, Italy. This was recently named one of the top five Halloween destinations in Europe. That is because it has a little bit of everything that you could want for a Halloween vacation. There’s a local ghost tour through an eerie historic landscape. There are legends about the terror of sea monsters. And this is a destination that a lot of people have always longed to visit.

Autumn is a terrific time to travel. In many places, the weather is warm during the day and comfortably cool at night. The fall leaves are changing colors. It is beautiful. So where should you go if you’re planning an autumn vacation.

Here are twelve terrific autumn vacation destinations:

1. Florence. If you have ever wanted to go to Italy then autumn is the time to do it. The summer crowds are gone but everything else that is great about Italy is still there. Florence is the top place to go at this time of year.

2. Upstate New York. Many people will tell you that New York City is a great place to visit in autumn and that is certainly true. However, you’ll find that a trip to upstate New York is even more magical. The beauty of the fall leaves on the trees here is just gorgeous. The serenity of the area is perfectly relaxing.

3. San Francisco. Many people make the mistake of visiting San Francisco in the summer. At that time, the city is cold and windy. However, San Francisco is gorgeous in the fall. It is sunny and warm, which is perfect for taking ferry rides and spending time in Golden Gate Park.

4. Buenos Aires. Like San Francisco, the weather is best in Buenos Aires in the fall (although it is actually springtime there when it is fall here). The days are warm and the nights are cool. There are many activities, parades and festivals that take place in this city during September, October and November.

5. Bavaria. This area of Germany is especially beautiful during the autumn months. The forests and trees surrounding this area are filled with the indulgent beauty of the changing seasons.

6. Kanasi of Xinjiang Province.
7. Vancouver. There is not a place in Canada that is not good to visit in the autumn months. That said Vancouver is a leading place. The natural beauty of this area is really magnified during the fall months as the colors begin to change.

8. Britain. What really makes Britain a terrific place to visit during the autumn months is that there are a number of popular walking festivals there at this time.
New York City is one of the great urban tourist destinations in the world. Its history, unbelievable number of sights and experiences, and legendary big city vibe put it in a class by itself. As with any major metropolis in the world, the Big Apple can be quite expensive. All those $50 or $100 entrees, cross-borough taxi rides, Broadway tickets and unexpectedly expensive museum admission fees add up, and can blow your week-long-vacation budget in 24 hours.

Luckily, with a little planning and some big city savvy, it is possible to make your Big Apple bucks go further.

Unlimited ride cards for the New York Subway are a great way to save money. These cards allow riders to use the subway an unlimited amount of times over a specific period. A one-day pass costs only $7, with a weekly pass costing $24. You still may find yourself taking a late night taxi ride or hopping a taxi to the airport, but to get anywhere in New York, the subway is usually more than sufficient for regular daytime hours. You can use it for a week for the same price as a single taxi ride.

The Staten Island Ferry acts as a means of public transit carrying passenger from the Staten Island to Manhattan. But it is also a great way to see the storied New York Skyline without spending lots of money for a boat ride aimed at tourists. This is also true for the city’s buses. While the subway helps you avoid all the traffic, the buses are better vehicles when it comes to sightseeing. You can use both these above-ground public transit options as cheap sightseeing tours, provided you are able to plan out a route that will leave you back where you started.

Some New York museums have free days, which are sponsored by corporations like Target.

And some offer free access after a certain hour of the day. It is best to check with each museum individually.

Hotels are not cheap in New York. Those traditional hotels that are under $100 may not offer the best experience (at best) and may not have proper security (at worst). The answer? Stay outside of a central area or opt for a hostel. Hostels, which are popular amongst young travelers in Europe, are hotels that offer dorm-style rooms (shared by 2,3, or more people) for well under $100 per night. Many are in the $40-$50 range.

The New York Pass offers discounted admission to 55 of the city’s most popular sites, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Guggenheim. For people who want to hit multiple sites over a three-day or weeklong period, purchasing this type of pass can be worthwhile because it will more than pay for itself. However, for tourists who will only visit one or two of the popular tourist attractions, and will spend most of their time exploring the city’s restaurants and neighborhoods, this pass is probably not a worthwhile investment.

Downtown Manhattan is filled with retail shops. But it is also one of the most interesting places in the world to window-shop. The lights and billboards make for the best urban scenery in the US and stores like the M&M Store are as much about providing an experience as they are about selling a product. So it is possible to visit this center of the retail universe without spending a dime, although it is just as easy to max out your credit cards if you are not disciplined and careful.

So traveling to the Big Apple does not necessarily have to be an expensive, big city excursion. With a little know-how and some planning, it can be quite cheap to visit the city for a weekend or longer. Yes, sometimes, paying the big money is unavoidable (performances, sporting events, that world-famous restaurant). But for travelers who follow some of the tips mentioned above for saving money in New York, there will be plenty left over when it comes time to splurge a little bit.

Do you want to get through airport security quickly and efficiently? The following 20 tips can help you do it:

Avoid wearing clothing, jewelry and accessories that have metal. You’ll set off the metal detector if you do and it will take longer to get through airport security.

Pack your pockets into a plastic bag. One of the things that people usually do at the metal detector is to empty out all of their pockets. You can simplify this by placing all of the items that normally go into your pockets into a single plastic bag. This bag is all that you’ll need to remove before you walk through the metal detector.

Wear comfortable but form-fitting clothing. If you wear loose or baggy clothing then you might be asked to go through additional security. The fewer layers of clothing you are wearing, the simpler the process is going to be.

Choose shoes that are easy to remove (such as flip flop sandals). You have to take off your shoes when going through security so this speeds things up.

Pack your carry-on bag so that it is completely uncluttered. You can use dividers and plastic bags to separate items in your carry-on so that they easily go through security.

Get a TSA approved backpack. If you have one then you don’t need to take your laptop out separately.

Limit the number of liquids you carry. You are limited to a one-gallon bag of clear containers measuring less than 3.4 ounces in size. Pack an even smaller amount if you can.

Pack meds properly. Pack your medications in a plastic bag. Include documentation proving that the medication is yours.

Check the TSA’s prohibited items list before you go. This will tell you if you need to pack certain items into your luggage instead of bringing it in your carryon. Examples of items that can’t go onto the plane are scissors, golf clubs, baseball bats, gun powder, hammers and brass knuckles.

10. Remove your coat as you approach the security line. It has to go through the X-ray machine.

11. Keep any gifts unwrapped. This will prevent the problem of having to unwrap the gifts for a security check only to re-wrap it again later.

12. Make sure that all batteries are charged. In some rare instances you may be asked to prove that cell phones and laptops are working. Make sure their batteries are charged so that you don’t have any issues.

13. Have your boarding pass and picture ID in hand. Don’t put this away until you have already gone through security.

14. Let airport security know if you are running late. One of the top travel hacks for people who are running late is to let someone at the airport know about the situation. They can help get you through security more efficiently.

15. Remove pets from carrying cases. If you are traveling with a pet then it needs to be removed from the carrying case as your turn to proceed approaches. Put the case through the X-ray screening machine. Hold the pet in your arms as you walk through the metal detector.

16. Remove babies from strollers. As with pets, children’s strollers and carriers must go through the X-ray machine. The baby can be held by the parent as he or she walks through the metal detector.

17. Keep your stress levels low. Arrive at the airport early. Travel during off-peak times. Eat before you go to the airport. These things reduce your stress levels so that getting through airport security won’t seem like such a big deal.

18. Be friendly to the staff. They are going to help you get through security more easily if you are patient and kind with them as they do their jobs.

19. Pay attention to what is going on. It’s stunning how many people ignore the directions of the security agents or don’t realize that their turn in line has arrived. Stay alert to move quickly through airline security.

20. Stick to yourself. Although you may want to pass the time by chatting up the stranger next to you, it’s best to avoid doing this. You never know what the other person is carrying on them. You want to avoid delays caused by “guilt by association” if the person near you has security issues.

Waterfalls are so magical. They cascade with powerful force down mountainsides. They are beautiful in their own right. They are also typically located in areas that are especially beautiful. Any waterfall that you may come across is a joy to see. However there are some grand waterfalls that are really must-see places for world travelers.

10 of the most amazing waterfalls in the world are:

1. Niagara Falls. Everyone knows that if you live in North America or Canada then you shouldn’t miss an opportunity to visit this set of waterfalls that straddles both countries. It is a family-friendly spot that is also very romantic.

2. Iguazu Falls. This set of waterfalls on the border of Argentina and Brazil is twice as large as Niagara Falls and arguably twice as beautiful. It actually has a lower amount of annual water flow compared to Niagara Falls but its surface area is larger so it looks really grand.

3. Victoria Falls. This is one of the largest sets of waterfalls in the entire world. It is located in South Africa on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. It has been called one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Clearly, that’s not something that you should miss out on if you get the chance to check it out.

4. Boyoma Falls. This set of waterfalls is technically the largest set of falls in the world as measured by volume. It consists of a series of seven different falls. It is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This war-torn region isn’t very conducive to travel but maybe at some point in the future it will be so you can put this on your “one day” travel list.

5. Angel Falls. At more than 3,000 feet in height this is the tallest waterfall in the world. To see water crashing that far down is absolutely amazing. It is indescribable and something that just has to be seen in person.

6. Dettifoss. This is the largest waterfall in Europe when measured by volume. It is located in Iceland so it is surrounded by unique natural beauty. You have to be willing to put in some effort to see these cool waterfalls though because they aren’t accessible by road.

7. Willamette Falls. This Oregon waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in North America. It doesn’t quite compare to the power and beauty of Niagara Falls but it’s definitely a must-see destination spot. It is horseshoe shaped which makes it a unique type of waterfall.

8. Havasu Canyon Waterfalls. This is a set of waterfalls located in Lake Havasu, Arizona. This is a short driving distance from the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon, which is something to think about as you plan your trip. What is really cool about the waterfalls here is that you can swim underneath some of them. That’s a fantasy that a lot of people have when it comes to waterfalls. There are multiple waterfalls of varying heights here. The more you’re willing to hike in, the better the waterfalls that you will see.

9. Kaieteur Falls. This waterfall is both tall and powerful. This makes it a very impressive sight to see. It is located in Guyana (which is on the northern coast of South America). It is inside of a national park so it is very accessible to people who are visiting the area. In fact it is a major tourist attraction of this area.

10. Gocta Waterfall. This is an average waterfall in terms of size. It is tall (over 2,000 feet) but not particularly wide. What makes it a must-see waterfall is that it’s a newly discovered waterfall. Although the people of Peru who lived near it had been aware of it for centuries, it wasn’t something that the wider world new about until 2005. This makes it a waterfall that not a lot of other travelers have seen which is neat for some people.

Packing for a cruise is a little bit different than packing for flights or train trips. Although many of the packing tips that normally help you will still be useful on a cruise vacation, there are some specific things that you need to make sure to pack for a cruise. Following you will find a handy list of ten of those items that can serve as the basis of your own cruise packing checklist.

All of your important documents. Many cruise vacations take you to one or more international destinations. For that reason it is more important than ever to make sure that you have all of your important documents with you. These documents include:

Cruise documents / itinerary / tickets

Passports, ID and required visas

Proof of citizenship (if required, check with your cruise line)

Health insurance card, medical history list, prescription list

Medications for motion sickness. Many people do experience some problems with motion sickness when they are on a cruise. You should meet with your doctor before a cruise to get medications for motion sickness including anti-nausea medication.

Layers of clothing. The weather on a cruise can change a lot depending on the location, wind, etc. It is important to pack layers of clothing so that you can always be comfortable during the trip. This includes packing a lightweight rain jacket just in case you encounter some rainy days during the vacation. Note that you should have a variety of different types of clothing including everything from workout clothes to formal attire.

Swimsuit. Almost everyone packs a swimsuit for their cruise vacation although this can vary depending upon your destination. Note that it may be smart to pack at least one extra swimsuit so that you have one to wear while the other is drying out. You may also want to pack a cover-up so that you can comfortably wear the swimsuit to cruise dining areas.

Snorkel equipment, boogie board, wetsuit, etc. Many cruise vacations provide you with the opportunity to enjoy water activities such as snorkeling during the trip. In most cases, the equipment that you need will be provided on the cruise ship or at the areas where the boat docks. However, you should check into this before you leave and bring any extra equipment you want that is not provided.

Camera. You will get to see things during your cruise vacation that you may never get to see again in your life. For example, you may see glaciers, sunsets over huge expanses of water and views of city skylines as you approach destinations where the cruise ship will dock. Airports start to look the same after awhile but every cruise ship represents new opportunities for seeing things that you have never seen before. Make sure that you pack a camera. A second underwater camera or waterproof camera may be a nice thing to have on the cruise ship as well.

Toiletries. Many people save themselves the trouble of packing toiletries for a trip because they figure that they can get what they need at their destination. It is different when you are on a cruise vacation. You don’t have the same range of convenience stores, supermarkets and drug stores that you would have at a typical vacation destination. Don’t worry; you will be able to get most of what you need on board the ship. However, the prices on cruise ships can be high so it is important to pack the main toiletries (shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc.) that you will need to use on a daily basis during the cruise vacation.

Reading material, writing utensils, etc. There are many activities to enjoy on a cruise ship. However, you will also have a lot of downtime during the cruise. You will have time to just sit still and think. You may want to bring a travel journal or a book series with you to enjoy during this plentiful downtime on the ship.

Travel alarm clock. Many people don’t realize how disorienting it can be to be on a cruise ship. You often lose track of time especially if your room doesn’t have a window. It helps to have a timepiece that shows you what time it is. You may want to bring along a travel alarm clock so that you can make it to specific events and dining times on the trip.

Power strip. The majority of cruise vacation rooms only have one outlet in them. This can be very inconvenient when you have multiple items that you need to plug in at the same time. Consider bringing a travel-friendly power strip on the cruise. Make sure that you check with your cruise line to ensure that you won’t draw too much power by using it.

Winter travel season is fast approaching. This is the time of year that people start thinking about their winter getaways. When the cold weather gets unbearable, a few days (or even a week) can be a lifesaver, or at least enough of a break to help you get through the rest of the snowy season with your sanity intact.

Because demand for tropical vacations rises during the colder months, so do the prices of airfares and hotels. Flights to the Caribbean, Hawaii and the South Pacific can nearly double during the tropical travel high season.

Some airlines offer better deals that others. Of course, it depends on which island destination you are headed for. Some airlines have more frequent flights and package offerings for certain islands that can significantly reduce the price of a flight or hotel.

Since it launched its service to the Caribbean (mainly from its hub in Fort Lauderdale), JetBlue has become a major player in the Caribbean’s low-cost air travel game. It offers plenty of sub-$100 one-way fares between Lauderdale and destinations like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas. In addition, JetBlue offers connecting service between major island destinations. That is rather rare for US-based airlines.

Another low-cost-carrier, AirTran, has also recently increased service to island destinations in the Caribbean. Destinations include the Bahamas, Aruba and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airline regularly lists promotional fares and sale prices on its web site, making them easy to find. Though AirTran does not have hotel/airfare packages, it does offer chances to book hotels at (sometimes) discounted rates through partner web sites.

Liat Airlines is a low-cost carrier that specializes in connecting the various Caribbean islands by air. The airline often works with Caribbean Airlines to serve passengers from the US. The airline is a no-frills carrier, but offers plenty of sub-$100 fares. Liat’s service makes it easy for travelers to catch connecting flights to some of the Caribbean’s less visited destinations. This makes cheaper, less crowded destinations easily reachable. The airline also offers hotel deals to fliers.

Caribbean Airlines connects major cities in Eastern North America with the Caribbean’s hottest destinations. Caribbean offers flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami, but also from other major hubs like New York JFK and Toronto Pearson. Destinations include Kingston, Barbados and Trinidad, and also less-visited places like Suriname, Saint Martin and Antigua. The airline is a good choice for non-package tourists who want an alternative to the service offered by legacy carriers.

Major legacy carriers all fly to the Caribbean and Hawaii. The prices can be comparable to other carriers, but are sometimes more expensive. However, for people traveling from destinations that do not have a direct service to the islands, United, Delta, Continental or American can often be the best deal overall. In addition, these airlines sometimes offer the best overall deals on resort/hotel and airfare packages. Each works regularly with resort and hotel chains and travel agents to provide a good selection of packages.

(image via BriYYZ)

Air Tahiti Nui is the major airline serving French Polynesia. These destinations (namely Tahiti and Bora Bora) are not cheap. Airfares on Tahiti’s major air carrier are no exception. However, the airline has several types of deals that are offered regularly and can be turned into significant money-savers. An example was a recent promotion that allowed kids to fly free to Tahiti with a paid adult ticket. Air Tahiti also offers packages that can significantly reduce the price of Tahiti and Bora Bora’s pricy hotels and resorts. In addition, the airline occasionally offers deals on trips from LAX to Paris.

Hawaiian Airlines is one of many carriers that fly to America’s 50th state. It offers some of the best deals on flights, with promotional fares available for under $400 round trip. The problem: passengers who aren’t on the West Coast have to catch a connecting flight because Hawaiian only flies from airports in the western one-fifth of the US. However, if prices are low enough, it can still be a good deal. This is especially the case for passengers who want to take advantage of Hawaiian’s package deals, which offer cheap prices on resorts and hotels for those who pay full-price for airfare. These packages can be a significant money-saver for tourists from the Mainland.

5. Singapore is the most accessible city in all of Asia. It is safe, clean and has world-class shopping, eating and arts scenes, as well year-round tropical weather.

6. Bangkok offers easy access to the unique culture of Thailand. The city can be crowded and chaotic, but it is legendary for its food, temples, friendly people, and anything-goes nightlife.

7. Istanbul is both a historic and modern city that has always straddled the line between Asia and Europe. Its East/West blend makes it an accessible but exotic destination.

10. London is one of Europe’s truly global cities. It is as exciting as New York City, as diverse as Paris, and easily accessible for English speakers.

11. Los Angeles is a sprawling city that offers much more than its most famous attraction, Hollywood.

12. Rome is a good urban destination for many reasons. It has a deep history, from the Roman Empire to the Italian Renaissance to modern times. It has food, religious and secular culture, and a great street-level atmosphere.

20. Berlin is, as it always has been, Germany’s number one city. No other place has the same amount of recent history attached to it and no other city can give you a taste of modern Germany’s cosmopolitan, diverse flavors.
